The International Baccalaureate (IB) has been offering high quality, challenging educational programmes worldwide for more than 50 years. There have been IB schools in South Africa since 1994.
The IB programmes challenge students to excel in their studies, and encourage both personal and academic achievement.
The IB Continuum consists of four programmes, namely the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme, the Diploma Programme and the Career-related Programme.
Each of the IB’s programmes is committed to the development of students according to the IB learner profile.
We believe that in order to enrich personal growth, and help facilitate international and open mindedness in our learners, more than one language should be acquired. English is the language of teaching and learning, and the language of communication used in the school and outside the classroom. Sepedi and Afrikaans are additional languages for Grades 1 to 6 taught as conversational languages. Afrikaans is the additional language for Grades 7 to 12. French forms form part of a Foreign Language Learning programme for Grades 4 to 8, where online resources are used.
Drawing from international best practice and research, Mokopane Destiny Academy implements an inquiry-based, concept-driven transdisciplinary curriculum.
The seven subject knowledge areas for Grades 1 to 6 are:
Mathematics and English form core subject knowledge areas of the curriculum. While subject knowledge is developed in all subjects, they are not taught in isolation. Rather, the transdisciplinary curriculum empowers teachers and learners to inquire into the big ideas which link different subjects, and enables them to make connections between subject knowledge and the real world. This approach enhances authentic subject knowledge development.
A house system and weekly mentroship programme develop learners’ character and wellbeing, We focus on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in school and in the world beyond.
Learning is inquiry-based and student-centred which enables learners to use their agency to ask questions, find answers and take responsible action through their learning. Learners actively build on their existing knowledge to make connections and new meanings.
Transdisciplinary learning means we integrate subjects, connect learning to real-life and expand learning across and beyond subjects using themes, skills and big ideas and concepts.
Concept-based inquiry is a powerful vehicle for learning that promotes meaning and understanding, and challenges students to engage with big ideas.
(Grades 7-9)
The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.
The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. In the MYP we aim to develop active learners, and internationally-minded young people.
The MYP is holistic and aims to develop the whole learner, not just academics.
It also focuses on a range of skills including thinking skills, research skills, collaboration skills and communication skills.
Service and Action forms an important part of the MYP at MDA as it enables learners to become employable leaders and life-long learners.
Grade 9 learners have to do a Community Project.
Students also benefit from a weekly mentorship programme, where their character and internal wellbeing are configured.
Grade 4 to 9 students follow a ‘bring your own chromebook’ policy.
(Grades 10-12)
MDA’s long-term plan is to provide the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which is recognised in South Africa, as its Grade 12 exit route. While we are working towards the sustainable implementation of the Diploma Programme we have a transition plan in place. As of 2022 MDA will partner with Hatfield Christian Online School. They offer a school-based online option which enables MDA’s students to study at MDA and write the Grade 12 examinations of the Independent Examination Board (IEB) at Hatfield Christian Online School. The IEB is an independent assessment body. The qualifications assessed by the IEB enjoy international recognition, and are pursued by the majority of independent schools in South Africa. This transition plan will allow current MDA students to choose to complete a well-established Grade 12 exit qualification within the safe, conducive and familiar environment of MDA.
The following are compulsory and elective subjects offered by Hatfield Christian Online School:

Our co-curricular programme refers to the activities and learning experiences that take place in school alongside the academic curriculum. It also includes optional extra-curricular activities that are offered to students after school hours.
Students also have access to various extra-curricular activities offered by MDA staff. Each term the activities offered are planned based on available resources and time, and are targeted at a specific grade or phases. These may vary from year to year.
Learning does not just take place in the classroom. Learners are exposed to various activities outdoors. Field trips and excursions are arranged for learners during the year. Examples include a field trip to Lapalala Wilderness School, visiting the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or an annual Hike for all MYP students.
MDA is proud to partner with Marshall Sports Academy in implementing a Physical Education Programme for our learners. During the course of an academic year this programme includes Physical Training, Parkour, Athletics, FUNgym, etc.
